Richard Start3785 viewsRichard L. "Dick" Start, 79, of Caledonia, Mich., went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010.
Dick served in the U.S. Army for 18 years and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1970 after four years of service. He has been a resident of New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Colorado, Kansas, Japan, Korea, France and Germany. He worked 16 years for GM at the Chevy Warren plant and the 36th Street plant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Winnifred Wright Start; and a brother, Leon. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Delores "Dee"; his children: Bill (Sue) Start, Richard (Laura) Start, Pat (David) Hensley and Rob Silk; eight grandchildren; a brother, Raymond Start; a sister, Arletta Cornell; sisters-in-law, Gloria Day and Pat Bildzok; and several nieces and nephews.
Richard donated his remains to Michigan State University for medical research.
A memorial service will be announced in the spring. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association

He was born April 12, 1921, in DeLancy, Pa., the son of James and Mary Morganti Saullo. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and had been employed as a molder by Chautauqua Hardware for 45 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Moose Lodge 1681. He enjoyed playing bingo and gardening. He is survived by four sons: James Saullo of Melbourne, Fla., Richard and David Saullo, both of Jamestown and Mark Saullo of Russell; 15 grandchildren: Pamela Regal of Etter, Pa., Julie Miller of Melbourne, Jim J. Saullo of Orlando, Fla., Lori Brandes of Ft. Knox, Ky., David II and Ryan Saullo, both of Corry, Dylan Saullo of Russell, Mark Saullo II of Sheffield, Pa., Lisa Hallburg, Stephanie, Richard, Cory and Cassandra Saullo, Jared and Kacym Stufflebeam, all of Jamestown; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Jake Saullo of Jamestown; and four sisters: Jenny DePasqual and Mary Warden, both of Jamestown, Della LaPorte Griffen of Westfield and Esther Vervill of California; and his companion, Jean Manhart of Ashville. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa LaPlaca Saullo, whom he married April 15, 1942; a grandson, Patrick Brandes; and two sisters: Josephine Myrich and Angie Saullo. The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Hubert Funeral Home. The Rev. Ray McGinnis, interim pastor of Kiantone Congregational Church, will officiate. Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. Raymond (Unlce Bud) Start173 viewsRaymond M. Start Sr., of 50 Jefferson St., Westfield, formerly of Panama, passed away peacefully Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Jamestown on Aug. 15, 1929, the son of Harold L. and Winnifred Wright Start. He attended Celoron Schools, worked for Proto Tool for 27 years, and retired from Hope's Windows. Ray served as a Staff Sgt. in the Army during the Korean conflict and in the Naval Reserve. He was a longtime member of the Celoron Legion. Ray had a wicked sense of humor that stayed with him until the end. He loved life, family and friends.
He loved going to the casino, playing bingo and he was a devoted Buffalo Bills fan. He was awarded honorary alumni of the Panama Central School for his active years of running the marker chains at home football games.
He is survived by a son Ray Jr. and three daughters: Arletta Diane Start, Cindy (John) Pierce, and Debbie (Ron) Hasson; a sister, Arletta Cornell and sister-in-law, Dee Start, of Michigan; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Margaret Wheeler Start in 1987; a daughter, Winnie Start, in 1980; a granddaughter, Tammy Fain, in 1984; three brothers, Harley Wheeler, Richard Start, and Leon Start; a brother-in-law, Gordy Cornell; and two sisters, Leah Young and Mary Lyons.
There will be memorial service to celebrate Ray's life on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at 3 p.m. at the Ashville Fire Department, 5338 Stow Road, Stow, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to Hospice Chautauqua County, 20 W.
